PARALELO PUBLICATION: PROMPTS FOR AUTHORS
Reminder:
The publication seeks to expand the audience for and raise awareness of the case studies and themes of Paralelo.
It also seeks to deepen understanding and build critical reflection.
Authors are therefore asked not to simply describe or 'promote' their work - essays which do this will not be priority for inclusion.
We would ask all contributors to analyse and contextualise what they are doing in relation to the thematic backdrop (how artists and designers from three different countries are working with science and technology in a transdisciplinary way to address environmental issues).
To help do this they should:
- offer some contextualisation on their work, either through mentioning their sources of inspiration and influence or citing others who may have commented
- situate their work in relation to other practice in this field current or past
- raise some challenges and problems which they have encountered, i.e. related to the transdisciplinary nature of their work
- raise possibility of future opportunities or challenges
- provide insights and new understanding which has not previously been published and which can help to define Paralelo as a distinctive initiative which can be built on in future for further research and cultural exchange
- If your contribution is a visual one, please provide a brief covering text which helps to contextualise the work

As announced during the event already, we are working on a collaborative publication (print on demand):
- To extend and synthesize the discussions that took place during Paralelo and which led up to it
- To disseminate ideas, discussions and processes (beyond the restraints of the actual meeting)
- To provide (new) research questions and act as a catalyst for future discussion

What are we looking for (format & content)?
We are looking for contributions which explore issues raised in the open space sessions, the public presentations, the wiki or during informal conversations that you have had during Paralelo. You can also offer contributions based on issues which lay behind the hosting of the event. We do not want to restrict the format of your contribution too much - it could be:
- collaborative writing/dialogue (e.g. e-mail or list conversations on the list, think of the conversation started by Koert for example)
- essays
- sketches/drawings/animations
- reflections on ideas/excerpts/sessions
- reflections on case studies/presentations
(post-paralelo, not a mere reproduction of cases/presentations)

A few more details
We hope to publish at least 10 contributions with a word limit 3,000 per contribution or 5 pages if it’s a non-textual contribution. This is an indication to keep it manageable! Of course it all depends on your eagerness to participate.
Contributions can be submitted in English or Portuguese.
(If any of the Dutch participants would really rather submit in Dutch, please let me know and I will try to arrange additional translation)
The publication is supported by Virtueel Platform & British Council in production, translation and distribution.
The result will be an offline version (print on demand) and a more extensive online version. Unfortunately there is not enough budget to pay contributors. But we will take care of distribution and will send print copies to everyone who’s contributed.

2) The deadline for contributions is: 22 August 2009
3) Planned publishing date is: mid October 2009
